An excellent write-up covering the whole abject mess. How many women continue to be victimized by this power-over, coercive dogma? What would "GLAD repentance" feel like on the other foot, Josh?
I just started reading Emancipation of The Mind, on the philosophical evolution of Abolitionism in ante-bellum America. The author discusses Frederick Douglass's epiphany that American christian churches were often supporting the institution of slavery, or if not overtly supporting it, trying to draw the sting out to make owning people and their descendants acceptable. It seems misogyny is of the same type.
It's infuriating how lightly and cavalierly they treat this issue, despite the devastation and damage it has caused.
It's not a mistake or misunderstanding, nor is it 'merely stupid.' They've been told, repeatedly, that this teaching has allowed many of us to be seriously abused in these marriages. We have begged and pleaded to be heard and expressed anger when we're blown off, minimized, or chastised, yet again, for daring to speak up. That is not 'piling on' but well-deserved pushback. They know and They. Do. Not. Care.
Yes, I'm acquainted with her work (though not well-acquainted). I think Vernick helps many women think in new ways about destructive evangelical teachings on "submission."
Yes, she has a wonderful program called CONQUER which she opens a few times a year and it's all about helping women deal with abuse in their marriages. It's stellar.
My pastor preached on marriage last year and didn't say anything like this. He stated that sex should be pleasurable for both parties. I did not grow up in these circles. I can't remember if anything was really taught about sex growing up other than you shouldn't have sex outside of marriage, which is biblical. I'm a lifelong member of the General Council of the Assemblies of God (the denomination Jimmy Swaggart was a part of), and this could possibly have a minister's credentials suspended or revoked.

DARVO saying woman too sensitive, etc.

I agree completely. They've been told & told & told & told. But they do not care.
Christa, you have been speaking for so long. They have zero excuse.
Great article and I'm glad I found your Substack. Are you familiar with Leslie Vernick's work?
